The OISFT opening will be announced live at 8 a.m. Thursday on WOVV, 90.1 fm.

OISFT is the Ocracoke Island Surf Fishing Tournament, for those of you not in the know.  Tonight is the kick off party at Howard's Pub.  Perkins said his dance card is filling up quickly, but I have no doubt he'll find room for any lovely ladies who care to join him in grooving to the Mighty Saints of Soul.

If you're not fishing in the tournament, you'll no doubt want hit the beach, cheer on friends old and new, and enjoy what should be a terrific, sunny day.  From Ramp 70 at the airport sections 34 to 1 lead to south point.  To visit teams fishing sections 35 to 55 head north.

Ramp 68 at the campground is open for two days, because OISFT was grandfathered in to the new beach driving areas.  The campground ramp is steep and soft, and anglers may opt to use ramp 67 instead to access fishing stations 56 through 70.

Competition hours are 8 - 11 a.m. and 1:30 - 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.  Teams rotate fishing stations each session, based on a random drawing.

The water temperature is hovering around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and some big blues have been caught this week, said head judge Woody Billings  All fish scored in the tournament are released alive.

At the Captain's meeting, Woody told anglers that Ranger Kenny Ballance, head of the Ocracoke District, is retiring at the end of this season.  Congratulate Kenny if you see him on the beach or out and about.

Please respect the nesting closures, others using the beach, and the 15 mph speed limit, said Woody.  Good luck and have fun!

Ocracoke Current will be covering OISFT, and WOVV will report live on all the action.  Check out our music calendar to see where the party heads after the fishing stops.  For those who can't be on Ocracoke for the event, listen online at
