Another lovely spring week on the sandbar....

NPS volunteers and rangers open the Ocracoke Lighthouse a couple of times a week. (You can go in, but not up!) Stop by the NPS Visitor Center for specific times or check the Current's Facebook page.

Clean out your unused arts and crafts supplies and bring them to the Ocracoke Library! The library is hosting an Arts & Craft Supplies SWAP beginning Wednesday, May 15-Saturday, May 18. Please bring donations by Tuesday, May 14. Public library hours are weekdays 3-7 (open til 8 on Wednesday) and Saturday, 9am-1.

Monday, May 13th:

10am: Ocracoke Lighthouse open 10am-Noon

10:30am: Ocracoke Pirates NPS Program @ Ocracoke Visitor Center. Learn about Blackbeard and other pirates with a park ranger.

3pm: Barrier Island Nature NPS Program @ Ocracoke Visitor Center. Join a park ranger for a talk about the wild side of the park.

Tuesday, May 14th: 

2:30pm: Ocracoke History NPS ProgramOcracoke Visitor Center. Join a park ranger to learn about the island’s rich past.

4pm: Beer Tasting @ Zillie's Island Pantry. There will be at least four beers from Deep River Brewing of Clayton, NC. The event will last till 7pm.

Wednesday, May 15th:  

3pm: Arts & Crafts Supplies SWAP @ Ocracoke Library. Everything is FREE. Come and get it! 

Thursday, May 16th:

10:30: Ocracoke History NPS Program @ Ocracoke Visitor Center. Join a park ranger to learn about the island’s rich past.

8pm: Live Music! Opening Night @ Coyote Music Den Friday nights through October 25th, Fridays at the Den will be Marcy & Lou "In Concert" with a special guest* (or not) at 8pm (doors at 7:30). A fun, heart-felt evening of live music in a magical setting. *This week it's Kate McNally!

Saturday, May 18th:

10am: Friends of Portsmouth Island meeting @ Ocracoke School. All are welcome. Jeff West, Superintendent of Cape Lookout National Seashore, will discuss the current state of the village, future plans, and conduct an informal Q&A session.  After the meeting, he will lead a tour through the village for those who wish to go. You do not have to sign up for the tour in advance, just show up at the meeting. Rudy Austin will do a headcount and those touring will leave right after the meeting adjourns. The boat ride to Portsmouth is $20 per person, round trip.

Noon: Hands Across the Sand event @ Lifeguard Beach. The annual international day of action for communities across the country and around the world to join hands at their local beaches in unity against offshore drilling. If you live here, you are depending on Mother Ocean for your livelihood in one way or the other. Ferry, Fish, Catching, Serving, Surfing and eating well all depend on keeping our shores clean. If you are a visitor, you come to our Island to be near the Sea. Protestors will gather at 10 minutes before noon, join hands and stay for 15 minutes.

6:30pm: Live Music! Martin & Friends @ Ocracoke Oyster Company. 

Sunday, May 19th: 

Services @ both churches: Ocracoke United Methodist (Sunday School 10am; service at 11am) and Ocracoke Assembly of God (Sunday School 10am, services at 11am and 6pm; also Wednesday night service at 7pm).
