Current Events May 7–13
The annual British Cemetery Ceremony is this Friday.

Monday, May 7th:

8:30am: OCBA Board meeting @ Berkley Manor. Board members only. Contributors (all the other members of OCBA) may attend a contributor input hour beginning at 10am.

1pm: Ocracoke Tourism Workforce Study Results @ Berkly Manor. Recently Dr. Whitney Knollenberg from North Carolina State University has been collecting data from Ocracoke business owners, residents, and policy makers regarding what makes Ocracoke a great place to work and live. This study has focused on identifying community resources that are currently supporting the tourism workforce on Ocracoke and those community resources that need greater investment to support the tourism workforce. Whitney would like to invite you to a presentation of the study results on May 7th, 1–3pm, at the Berkley Manor. If you are unable to make the presentation but are interested in the results of the study please contact Whitney at wgknolle@ncsu.edu.

4:30pm: Play Ball! Ocracoke Dolphins host a HOME conference tournament game at Ocracoke Community Park against our rivals from across the sound, the Mattamuskeet Lakers. Go Dolphins!

6pm: Hyde County Board of Commissioners meeting @ Community Center. The agenda and packets for meeting are now available to the public. Click here to view the documents. The public is invited to attend.

Tuesday, May 8th:

6:30am: Primary Election Day. Polls are open 6:30am–7pm at Ocracoke Fire Hall. 

7pm: Island Trivia @ Gaffer's Just $2 to play! For the second week, proceeds will benefit Ocracoke resident John Simpson, who recently underwent four surgeries in just twenty-one days. Due to circulation issues caused by an infection, John had to have his leg amputated at the knee. He says he's "thankful to be alive – and it's humbling and appreciated the way this community is helping out." 

Wednesday, May 9th: 

6:30pm: OCBA Civic Affairs meeting @ Berkley Manor Agenda items include: OCBA 2018-18 Budget Presentation  Passenger Ferry Update – Jed Dixon, Tram Update - Hyde County, Community Square Update - TBD, National Park Service Update. All are welcome to come join in the fun! 

Thursday, May 10th:

7pm: Churchill's Pirates Special Program @ Ocracoke Library. Rob Reedy will give a presentation on "Churchill's Pirates" about the Royal Naval Patrol Service. The H.M.T. Bedfordshire, torpedoed off the coast of Ocracoke in 1942, was a vessel in the RNPS, which cruised the coast looking for German U-Boats. All are welcome to this FREE program which complements the British Cemetery Ceremony on May 11th.

7pm: Ocracoke Island Decoy Carving Guild meeting @ Community Center. Open to the public; memberships available. The OIDCG meets monthly. This month, bring your favorite carving for the show & tell portion of the meeting.

Friday, May 11th:

11am: 11am: British Cemetery Ceremony at the British Cemetery. This year is the 76th anniversary of the sinking of H.M.T. Bedfordshire off the North Carolina coast. Representatives from the British Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy will be in attendance, as well as members of the United States Coast Guard, family of the deceased sailors, and seniors from Ocracoke School among others. All are welcome to attend the ceremony, and the luncheon to follow at Ocracoke Community Center.

8pm: Live Music @ Coyote Music Den! Martin, Marcy, and Lou "Playing Your Ocracoke Memories" in the intimate listening roon of the Coyote Music Den in the Community Square. Every Friday night through November 26th. $15 adults/$7 kids under 12. Doors open at 7:30pm. Bring your own refreshments; soft drinks and water available for purchase. 

Saturday, May 12th:

1pm: Play Ball! Ocracoke's Marlins (7–9 year-old league) will host a baseball game @ Ocracoke Community Park! 

3pm: Play Ball! Ocracoke's Orioles (10-12 year-old league) will host a baseball game @ Ocracoke Community Park! 

6:30pm: Live music! Martin & Friends @ Ocracoke Oyster Company

6pm: Fusion 2 Dinner @ Berkley Manor. Zillie’s chef Chris Johnson will again be collaborating with Eduardo Chavez of Eduardo’s for a special five-course chefs’ tasting menu & wine dinner on Saturday, May 12th. Last year’s event was a big hit and a sellout is expected again this year. Sunday, May 13th:

Happy Mother's Day! 

Services @ both churches: Ocracoke United Methodist (Sunday School 10am; service at 11am) and Ocracoke Assembly of God (Sunday School 10am, services at 11am and 6pm; also Wednesday night service at 7pm).
