Wind and the high seas played a role in keeping many of the charters inshore for the second half of June. It seemed often times the calm flat days were not as productive as the rough and windy days, but many Ocracoke visitors who were willing to battle the rocky ocean fared well in the Gulf Stream.
June 18th
This was a nice half day charter for JB and Kayla (pictured below.) They caught their limit with 2 amber jacks, 2 grouper and managed a terrific cobia aboard Dream Girl Charter.
June 26th
Tom Beach and Clark Henry (pictured below) after full day fishing with a party of four aboard Drumstick Fishing Charter caught 7 dolphin, 6 blackfin tuna, 9 vermillion snapper, and 11 trigger fish. Tom used to work for the Coast Guard but now lives in Summerville. Clark is living in Wilmington, NC.
Brian from Fredericksburg, VA fished that same day and caught a beautiful sail fish with Captain Steve Wilson aboard Dream Girl. Photo of fish not available as charter is no longer allowed to “boat” these catches to take pictures. Brian is a man of few words and a little camera shy, but he is pictured here helping out with the end of the day boat cleaning. John from Quebec was on board too, and was happy to share his photo of this massive red drum. (Pictured below)
July 3rd
Jack Luttrell from Elizabethtown, Kentucky brought his son Gavin aboard the Gecko Charter boat. Captain Ernie Doshier said this was the youngest fisherman he has ever had out on the Gulf Stream. Lots of vermillion snapper and trigger fish that day, but it was three year old Gavin (pictured with Captain Ernie and his dad) who caught the only dolphin for the Day!
That same day local resident Denny Widener took his stepdaughter Autumn out and got a mixed bag of trigger fish, sand tile fish, vermillion snapper, and silver snapper while bottom fishing on a half day charter with Dream Girl.
Drumstick charter also brought a catch of fish for Sarah and Cody Jenkins that day. They just got engaged July 1st and were here to celebrate the engagement. (Pictured below.) They were here with Uncle Bob and Aunt Debbie as well as friends Sam and Frank Walsh from Winston Salem.
July 3rd and 4th festivities trumped fishing details with the return of fireworks and Independence Day agenda, but forecast in the coming week looked amazing. Spanish mackerel and blues are in abundance along the beaches and just inside the inlet so check back next week for a report on some Soundside fishing and beach trolling with Ocracoke’s light tackle charters with Captain Norman Miller on the Rascal and Captain John Ferrara on Fish Tale.
