Dogs of Ocrafolk

Meet some of the Festival's furry, four-legged friends.

The annual Ocrafolk Festival of Music and Storytelling is known to be family-friendly, and it's canine-friendly, too. Local and visiting dogs dig the laid-back Festival scene, and groove to the musical vibe. Jordan took photos while I interviewed a sampling of Festival dogs for this exclusive Ocracoke Current photo essay.

This is Lucy. She was a little bit camera shy, but the life of the party! Lucy, a miniature labradoodle from Elizabeth City, received a lot of attention while holding down the fort at her owner’s craft stand. We couldn’t stop petting her soft little curls, and she quickly became the inspiration for this whole article!

This beautiful smile belongs to Fiona, an English cocker spaniel from Colorado. Her family sailed in from Oriental to enjoy Ocrafolk- what a treat! Fiona commented that she was totally impressed with the Paperhand Puppets parade!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Deva Om is a chihuahua mix from Southern Shores. He is seen here wearing some sweet festival garb- an Iron Man suit! It was a pleasure to meet this cool dude.

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Tucker is a fun guy – an adorable beagle mix! We peg him for a life-time fan of Jef the Mime. But that could just be me projecting on him.

Dogs of Ocrafolk

We chased down George and his owner, who were both super nice and patient with us during the interview! George is a terrier mutt who loves to visit Ocracoke, but he does not like the water!! George really digs Kimmie’s tiedyes. (He’s not alone in that!!)

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Meet Cher and Lucy, two returning guests of the Ocrafolk festival! Lucy (left) was enjoying her second year at the festival, while Cher is an old hand at Ocrafolking around – a fifth-year visitor! Thanks to these two Chinese cresteds for all of the enthusiasm, support, and fabulous hair they contribute to our annual weekend of fun!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

This is Dozer, a 10-year-old shihtzu. She was ready to be done with the photo shoot and keep festival-ing! We can understand that. Her favorite bands were Beleza and Mahalo Jazz 2!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

These two cuties are from Alexandria, VA. Raven (right) is a border collie shepherd, and Bear is a Rottweiler-lab mix. They seemed to be very enthusiastic Ocrafolk attendees!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Lily is a beautiful Australian cattle dog who’s just here for a good time! She is wondering if perhaps she could get invited to harmonize with the Ocrachicks next year – consider it, Marcy Brenner!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Josie is a super cute chow-chow mix hailing from Vermont! Her owners honeymooned in Ocracoke in 1990 and have been coming back regularly ever since! Doesn’t she just rock the look of a beach dog? Go Josie!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Meet Buster, a mixed breed from Virginia Beach. He loved the events this year, but has to say he is disappointed Philip Howard didn’t tell stories, as his slot is always the best place to pick up babes. Thank you, Buster, for posing so nicely!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

This is Diamond. She’s a girl’s best friend, and so naturally she would like to recommend the Madame Presidents (woohoo!)!! Diamond is a German shepherd mix from Virginia Beach. Her owners are not only kind folks, but also current Current readers! Thanks, guys!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

This adorable guy is Phillie, a Boston terrier. Phillie is actually a local – shoutout to owner Jarett Werley! Phillie is glad that the weather turned out nicely for festival weekend. Keep truckin’, Phillie!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Stuart is a wheaten-colored Scottish terrier. He’s two years old, and he’s got personality! We fell in love with him instantly!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Nadia, which means “hope” in Russian, is a very photogenic husky. We also got to hear her say “I love you!” on cue. We’re honored she showed off her talents for us! Hope and love are plentiful at the Ocrafolk festival, thanks in part to lovely Nadia!

Thor, a golden retriever from Greensboro, reports that he’s a die-hard fan of Donald Davis’ storytelling. He’s read all of his books (that’s a lot of reading!) and owns all his tapes. Thor really loves Donald’s work, and will be signing himself up for the annual storytelling workshop in years to come.

Fuzz is a local chocolate lab (thanks Cat Farleigh for lending us your time!). He seemed to be generally having a good time, and is pictured here keeping cool by the Magic Bean coffee shop.

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Maggie Thomas is a Coton de Tulear hailing from Raleigh. Her family originally adopted her as a stray from the Netherlands! Maggie Thomas speaks Dutch, and according to her loving family, she also has the habit of occasionally pretending to be a cat! (Don’t we all…) Just look at that happy festivaling face!!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

This dachshund is named Zoe, and she lives in Chapel Hill, but her family sailed out of Oriental for the festival. We are glad she came – what a sweet face! She reported pending plans to run off and join the circus – Alberti’s Flea Circus!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

This is Riptide, a local Labradoodle. Riptide is hoping that Kaira Ba comes back again next year!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Meet Jinxy, a black standard poodle from Swansboro, NC. We love how she is totally strutting her stuff! This fabulous poodle loved getting to see De Tierra Caliente the most!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Atticus Harper Austin is a labrador retriever from Ocracoke. He is 3 ½ years old. He took a break from roaming his favorite place (Springer's Point) to get spiritual at the Gospel Sing on Sunday morning.

Dogs of Ocrafolk

This is Teddy, a super cute bichon! She was so happy to see the Bucket Brothers perform – they were an awesome new act!

Dogs of Ocrafolk

Chien Lunatique is a 6-year-old goldendoodle from Rappahannock County, Virginia. She goes by Luna, but her full name was too cool not to put in here! She loves her some Blue Eyed Bettys.

Dogs of Ocrafolk

This is Fletcher, a double doodle from Manteo, NC. He dropped by the Festival to hear Molasses Creek on Saturday, but missed getting his picture made. On Sunday, his parents were instrumental in keeping the info booth going, so we asked them for a photo because Fletcher is too cute to leave out!

This is our Ocrafolk Mystery Dog! Just look at that face! We couldn't leave him/her out of the story, but we seemed to have lost our notes on this lovely canine music lover. If you can identify this dog, please let us know at ocracokecurrent@gmail.com

Thanks to all our furry friends who came out to the Ocrafolk Festival! And the dogs, too!
