A native of Ocracoke, she was the daughter of the late Napoleon Howard and Sabra Tolson Howard. Virginia was a homemaker and a member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church and the Women’s Society.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Clyde Sherrill Austin; two daughters, Tammy Austin Tolson and Trudy Austin; and a grandson, Casey Tolson, all of Ocracoke. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Claude Gaskill, Jesse Gaskill, and Charles Howard.

A funeral will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Ocracoke United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Bryant officiating. There will be a covered dish dinner for family and friends following the service in the Methodist Rec Hall. Private burial will take place at the Howard-Williams cemetery.
