Saltwater Connections Launches Outer Banks Heritage Trails Website

Press Release

Ocracoke businesses can apply for a listing on the new website.

Saltwater Connections has announced an opportunity for public sites and commercial businesses located in the 21 communities along the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway to be included on the Outer Banks Heritage Trails website (www.outerbankstrails.org).

The website complements the printed trails brochure identifying more than 40 public sites that was distributed to visitor information centers and businesses along the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway last year. In 2015, the website will be expanded to include additional points of interest and businesses.

There is no fee to be listed on the website, but proprietors need to complete a short application describing how their businesses promote the environmental uniqueness, traditional work and craft skills, local seafood, or community history and heritage of the region.  The application is available on the website.

The Outer Banks Heritage Trails website currently features five trails:  Traditions, Trades and Treasures, a community heritage trail; Land, Sea and Lighthouses, a maritime history trail; Marsh, Sound and Maritime Forest, an outdoor recreation trail; From Dock to Table, a local seafood trail; and the Down East Paddle Trail.

The website and brochure were designed and developed by Hot Wilmington.  Financial support for development and printing was provided by Saltwater Connections, Ocracoke Civic and Business Association, NC Sea Grant, Resourceful Communities at The Conservation Fund, The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and Albemarle-Pamlico NationalEstuary Partnership.

Saltwater Connections (www.saltwaterconnections.org) is a collaborative of community members and organizations united by a shared common interest in building stronger communities along the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway now and for the future.  The collaborative crafts innovative projects that share and perpetuate the maritime culture of the region, encourage economic diversity, promote community health and wellness, and serve the needs of all residents.
